Training - Week 6

Training Week 6

6/24/11 - Skip day

6/25/11 - Second outside run. Ran 3.36 miles in 57 minutes. My pace was slowed a bit by people on the trail who didn't have their dogs on leashes. Had to take it easy passing with my little dog who was. Also, did have another moose appearance. But luckily it was at the end of the run and I was able to take another trail and finish.

Training - Week 5

Training week 5

6/17/11 - Skip day

6/18/11 - Spent the day in Anchorage walking around, first watching friends finish their first marathon then at the solstice festival. Was inspired to my first outdoor run by the marathon participants. But my run was cut short by a moose on the trail. And since I had a movie I needed to get to and I didn't want to get trampled by the moose, my run was only 2.5 miles. But I downloaded the coolest app SportsTracker. It uses the gps in my phone to track my miles, pace, all kinds of cool info.

6/19/11 - Skip day

6/20/11 - Rode 10 miles in 50 minutes.

6/21/11 - Swam for 50 minutes.

6/22/11 - Wasn't feeling well after eating stuff I shouldn't have. Didn't feel like working out. So as a compromise I jumped on the elliptical for 30 minutes.

6/23/11 - Had to stay late at work. So no working out.

Training - Week 4

Okay, I know I fail lately at posting my training schedule. :( Catching up today.

6/10/11 - Skip day.

6/11/11 - Hiked 5 miles with the dogs.

6/12/11 - Friends birthday. Decided it'd be a skip day and Spent it celebrating.

6/13 & 6/14/11 - Was sick. Stayed home in bed. Lesson learned. If you are able, you probably should work out.

6/15/11 - Still felt like crap, after work slept.

6/16/11 - Swam for 55 minutes.

Writing a Novel is a lot like Falling in Love

I’ve recently started a new WIP (work in progress for those non writer readers). I was sitting at work sorting through e-mails in the rare half second pause between one call and the next and I found my focus was far far away from seeing if the examiner had adjusted the claim I’d asked for or not.

Where was my focus, you ask? It was lost in a swamp staring down at a Teflon wrapped body halfway reclaimed by the earth that had important secrets to share. It got me thinking about how similar writing a novel is to that shiny stage in the beginning of a relationship when your attention is focused on the object of your affection.

Here is a short list of the similarities that struck me:

- You spend every spare moment thinking about or daydreaming up where things might be going or will end up.

- Every time you think of about time spent on it/with them you can’t help but smile at the way it/they make you feel. Alive/happy/special/interesting/engaged.

- Little random things during your day remind you of it/them.

- Timing and commitment can either ruin things or allow them to thrive.

- The story/man or woman can help us feel confident or turn is into an insecure mess.

- Something can always be learned from our failures to help us grow and give us strength.

- When we find the right one and things really click it changes our life.

They say when you find what you love you’ll never work another day in your life. (they must never have had to edit!) What is your passion? What gets you out of bed and makes you feel alive?

Training - Week 3

Triathlon training - Week 3

6/3/11 - Was a skip day. I shopped, made goodies, and did domestic things.

6/4/11 - My sister-in-law hooked me up with a friend of hers that is also a beginner. We were going to meet and run outside but it didn't end up working out today, then it rained. So life and weather dashed those plans. So I did 3.5 miles on the treadmill. (On a completely unrelated note - my first quiche turned out amazing!)

6/5/11 - I planned to bike but it rained and I was feeling lazy and unmotivated. But towards bedtime I got my motivation back and ran, but only 2 miles since my wake up time is 4:15 am. Blek.

6/6/11 - Saw X-Men First Class (totally acceptable reason not to work out!)

6/7/11 - Swam for 50 minutes.

6/8/11 - 9 Miles on the bike.

6/9/11 - Swam for 50 minutes.

Training - Week 2

Triathlon training - Week 2

5/27/11 - Did 3.25 miles on the treadmill.

5/28/11 and 5/29/11 - I spent the morning and most of the early afternoon Saturday moving furniture by myself. So I did get a good workout even if it wasn't a traditional one. Then I spent the late afternoon and evening enjoying the holiday weekend with my friends. (Shooting my bow and other fun stuff) Sunday I took it easy during the day then spent the evening doing the same as the night before.)

5/30/11 - Rode the 9 mile bike course - finished in 51 minutes.

5/31/11 - Had a major allergic reaction and swelled up like a balloon to the point walking and breathing was difficult. So skipped the gym and had a nice long nap.

6/1/11 - Swam for 45 minutes.

6/2/11 - Swam for 50 minutes - really pushed myself and ended up with sore shoulders. =D

Training - Week 1

Triathlon training schedule:

5/19/11 - Registered

5/20/11 - Was thinking a 5k was 3.5 miles so that's what I did it took me 63 minutes. I walked the first 30 minutes thinking I'd get my base pace till I remembered, duh the treadmill calculates pace for me. So then I alternated running and walking for the second half. (I'm really short, just under 5 foot so don't laugh. I take 3 steps for every one step most people take) Also, I really did like 4.25 because the book tray (no I wasn't reading I had my Zune on it) broke off and knocked the key out wiping out my first 10 minutes.

5/21/11 - I rode the full 9 mile bike course just to get a feel and see how long it would take me. It was a rocky start with the first part being the hardest hill. I was cursing my sister-in-law's name and thinking the biking part would be the hardest part for me. I figured I'd make it up to the end of the first major street of it and turn around but once I passed that hill I was good, then there were a few more hills that made me want to cry/strangle SIL but over all it wasn't too terrible. I finished it in under an hour and I was good to go when I got done. I was even dancing to the music as I put my bike away and then went and hung with friends. Though I might not be able to sit for a week. My friend sent me a link for a gelly covering for my bike seat. I'm thinking $15 bucks is so worth it if it helps.

5/22/11 - Played on the Kinect with my nephews for 2 and a half hours.

5/23/11 - Swam for 40 minutes - was able to swim 8 full laps in 13 minutes but I think the lanes are a bit longer at the Wasilla High pool where the race will be.

5/24/11 - Ran a 5k in 49 minutes - well it was a combinations of running and walking, alternating 6-7 minutes of running and 3-4 minutes of walking depending on how fast I ran the stretch before.

I did discover a concern today. What if it's crispy critter weather the day of the race? I'll either melt or puff up like a cooked marshmallow. Or maybe it'll just take me extra long to finish as I sprint from shade to shade. Seriously though, the sun is a concern. I'll need to figure out how to account for it. Any suggestions?

5/25/11 and 5/26/11 - Went to the gym to swim but there was a power outage and the gym was closed Wednesday and Thursday. I feel a little panicky that stood two days out. But everyone needs a break and I used the time to go to Battle Los Angeles, which was awesome btw.
